Class: Intro to Pottery Wheel - Learn to Throw Pottery

Intro to Pottery Wheel is a 4-week class that's perfect for beginners and newcomers without experience. Learn the foundational skills needed to master the art of throwing pottery on a potter's wheel in a professional and supportive environment. Those with some prior experience in pottery or ceramics are also welcome to join for review of foundational skills.

This class meets from 10am-12pm on Sundays in April 2025.

Class Overview

In Intro to Pottery Wheel you’ll be guided through the fundamental techniques and skills needed to pursue wheel throwing as a lifelong art form. Taught by an experienced ceramicist, this pottery class offers a step-by-step approach to creating pottery using a potter's wheel.

Course Structure:

Four weekly sessions, each lasting two hours (8 hours total of guided instruction).

What You'll Learn:

  • Throw cups, bowls, and plates in a relaxed and welcoming studio environment
  • Apply basic surface decoration techniques
  • Utilize glazing techniques to finish your pieces
  • There are no mistakes while learning pottery--just good experiences!

Weekly Class Schedule:

Week One

Studio orientation, wedging clay, wheel operation and body positioning, centering clay, and preparing to pull walls.

Week Two

Techniques for pulling walls, throwing cups versus bowls, and throwing plates.

Week Three

Trimming earthenware, sgraffito surface decoration, and additional demonstrations on wheel techniques.

Week Four

Glazing techniques, final demonstrations, and advanced wheel techniques, including making handles.

Materials Included:

  • 25 pounds of clay
  • Use of aprons, tools, and glazes
  • Students receive key-code access to the studio on the first day of class
