Intro to Pottery Wheel

This 4-week class is perfect for beginners new to throwing pottery, and for those with some experience on the pottery wheel. 

A great way to learn a lifelong hobby.

Overview: In Intro to Pottery Wheel, you'll learn the foundational skills and techniques needed to pursue wheel throwing as a lifelong art form. Taught by an experienced ceramicist at Denver Pottery Studio, this class offers a step-by-step approach to throwing pottery using a potter's wheel.

Structure:  Four weekly sessions, each lasting two hours (a total of 8 hours of guided instruction).

Studio Access:  Enrollment includes access to our pottery studio for the duration of the course (excluding designated class times, see the Open Studio page for more exact times). Students can work in the pottery studio outside as much as they would like. 

What You'll Learn: By the end of Intro to Pottery Wheel, you'll be able to:

  • Wedge and center 3 pounds of clay
  • Throw cups, bowls, and plates
  • Apply basic surface decoration techniques
  • Apply glazing techniques

Weekly Schedule:

  • Week One: Studio orientation, wedging clay, wheel operation and body positioning, centering clay, and preparing to pull walls.
  • Week Two: Techniques for pulling walls, throwing cups versus bowls, and throwing plates.
  • Week Three: Trimming earthenware, scraffito surface decoration, and additional demonstrations on wheel techniques.
  • Week Four: Glazing techniques, final demonstrations, and advanced wheel techniques, including making handles.

Materials Included:

  • Each student receives 25 pounds of clay for use during the course.
  • Use of aprons, tools, and glazes is included with registration.
  • Students receive keycode access to Denver Pottery Studio on first day of class.

Open Studio:

  • Enrolled students have unlimited access to the pottery studio outside of class hours.
